Brad fell back onto a diner stool, burying his face in his trembling hands. The weight of his arrogance, his cruelty, and his misplaced pride came crashing down on him all at once. The badge on his chest felt like a hot iron burning into his skin.

“I’m sorry...” Brad wept, his body shaking with deep, gut-wrenching sobs. “I’m so sorry... I didn’t know... God, I didn’t know...”

“Ignorance is an explanation, Brad, but it is not an excuse,” Marcus said firmly, though his voice bore no malice—only the heavy, solemn tone of a judge executing the law. “Power without character is tyranny. A badge without integrity is just a gang uniform.”

Marcus signaled to Agent Reynolds. The US Marshal stepped forward, drawing his handcuffs.

“Deputy Brad Miller,” Agent Reynolds declared in a cold, professional voice, “you are under arrest for federal civil rights violations, official misconduct under color of law, and conspiracy to commit extortion.”

Brad didn't resist. He didn't shout, he didn't point fingers, and he didn't pull his badge. He slowly stood up, held out his wrists, and allowed the steel cuffs to click tightly around his arms—the exact same handcuffs he had threatened to use on his own father just twenty minutes earlier.

As the troopers led Brad toward the door, Marcus stepped into his path, stopping him one last time.

Marcus looked into his son’s tear-filled eyes. He didn't look at him with hatred; he looked at him with the fierce, unwavering love of a father determined to save his child’s soul from complete ruin.

“You will serve your time in federal prison, Brad,” Marcus told him quietly, placing a warm hand on Brad’s shoulder. “You will pay your debt to this community, and you will learn what it truly means to respect human dignity. But hear me clearly: when you finish your sentence and walk through those prison gates, I will be standing right there waiting for you. The land will be waiting. A real life will be waiting. And I will help you rebuild yourself into a true man—not a bully with a badge.”
