“Your mother is remarkably perceptive, Deputy Miller,” Marcus said, his deep voice cutting through the heavy tension in the room. “Though I suspect her panic stems from guilt rather than wisdom. Your late father, Sheriff Thomas Miller, spent thirty years telling you stories about his legacy. He taught you to wear that badge like a whip to drive people into the dirt.”

“Don’t you dare talk about my father!” Brad snarled, his anger overpowering his confusion. “My dad built this department! He was a war hero and a legend in this state!”

“Your father was a thief,” Marcus said flatly, without a trace of hesitation or anger in his tone.

Brad lunged forward, but Margaret threw her entire body between her son and the tall stranger, weeping uncontrollably. “Brad, stop! Please, listen to him!”

Marcus laid three official legal documents flat onto the laminate counter, right beside the plate of food Brad had ruined.

“Document number one,” Marcus stated, pointing a dark finger at the top sheet bearing an embossed seal. “A federal receivership order issued by the United States District Court. Due to thirty years of systemic corruption, stolen county funds, and civil rights violations initiated by your father and continued by your department, the Oakridge Sheriff’s Office has been stripped of its authority. As of seven o’clock this morning, your badge is meaningless.”

Brad laughed nervously, though his breath was growing shallow. “You’re crazy. A piece of paper doesn’t mean a damn thing in this county. Who the hell do you think you are?”

“Document number two,” Marcus continued smoothly, ignoring the young man’s bravado. “A foreclosure and asset seizure deed on the Miller family estate, including the house you live in, the land your father stole, and the vehicle you drove here in. Every dime your father pretended to own was built on fraudulent loans and stolen property. My legal trust bought those notes three weeks ago. You own nothing, Deputy.”

Brad’s face went completely ghost-white. He looked at his mother, expecting her to call the man a liar, but Margaret had collapsed onto her knees on the diner floor, her face buried in her trembling hands as she sobbed.

“Mom... tell me he’s lying,” Brad begged, his voice dropping its arrogant edge for the first time, replaced by a child-like panic. “Tell me dad didn’t leave us broke!”
