Chief Judge Vance.
Brad felt his knees go weak. The room spun around him. His hand slowly slid off the grip of his sidearm. The man whose breakfast he had casually kicked across the floor was not a helpless wanderer, nor was he a local troublemaker. He was Chief Judge Marcus Vance—one of the most influential federal judges in the entire southern circuit, a man who answered directly to the highest legal authorities in the United States.
“Thank you, Agent Reynolds,” Marcus said calmly, bowing his head slightly. “Please hold the perimeter for a few minutes. I am concluding a personal matter.”
“Understood, Your Honor,” the agent replied, stepping back to guard the door.
Brad backed into the counter, his hip bumping against the chrome trim. His mind was racing, trying to piece together a reality that was rapidly disintegrating. “Judge? You’re a federal judge? Why... why come to a diner in Oakridge? Why come after my family?”
Marcus picked up the thin white envelope from the counter and held it out toward Brad. “Open it.”
With trembling fingers, Brad snatched the paper. Inside were two documents: an official state birth certificate dated thirty years ago, and a certified DNA diagnostic report bearing the seal of a renowned medical laboratory.
Brad scanned the text. His eyes darted down the page until they hit the line labeled Biological Father.
The name printed on the legal paper was not Thomas Miller.
