Brad closed his eyes, fresh tears spilling over his lashes, and gave a faint, humbled nod. “Thank you... Dad.”
The marshals escorted Brad out into the morning sunlight, the flashing lights casting long red and blue reflections across the diner windows as the police cruisers pulled away.
The diner remained silent. Marcus turned to Sarah, the trembling waitress who stood wide-eyed behind the counter. He reached into his briefcase, pulled out a brown envelope, and laid it gently on the counter next to her dish towel.
“Sarah,” Marcus said with a warm, comforting smile. “This is the master deed and clear title to this diner building, along with a paid-in-full receipt for your mortgage. The county officials who were extortionately raising your rent will never bother you again. This property belongs entirely to you now.”
Sarah gasped, her hands covering her mouth as tears of gratitude welled up in her eyes. “Your Honor... I... I don't know what to say... I can't accept this—”
“You earned it by working hard and keeping your head held high in a town that was unkind to you,” Marcus replied softly.
Marcus looked down at the floor. He slowly bent down, picked up his unbroken silver fork from the linoleum tiles, placed it neatly on the counter, and closed his briefcase with a crisp snap.
He looked around the room at the quiet patrons, offering a polite nod of his head. “Good day, everyone.”
