“He didn’t leave us broke, Brad...” Margaret cried, her voice muffled by her tears. “He left us in millions of dollars of debt... He stole everything... and Marcus bought it all back...”

Marcus looked down at the young officer standing before him. His dark eyes softened slightly, shifting from stern justice to a painful, lingering sorrow. He reached into his suit jacket one last time and pulled out a thin, unmarked white envelope.

“The bank notes and court orders aren’t the real reason I drove into Oakridge this morning, Brad,” Marcus whispered softly. “I came because of what is inside this envelope. A secret your father took to his grave... and a truth your mother was too cowardly to ever tell you.”

Brad’s hands shook uncontrollably as he stared at the white envelope resting on the counter. Before he could reach for it, the bright red and blue lights of multiple law enforcement cruisers flashed wildly through the diner’s front glass windows.

No one in that diner could breathe as the final truth hung in the air, waiting for the storm to hit...

The heavy glass doors of the diner swung open, and the cold morning air washed inside, carrying with it the synchronized footsteps of armed men. Four United States Marshals and three State Trooper officers walked into the establishment in formation, their boots heavy against the floorboards.

The patrons shrank back into their booths. Brad turned sharply, expecting his fellow local deputies to step in and handle the situation. But the officers didn't look at Brad. They walked straight past him, stopped two feet from the counter, and snapped into a crisp, rigid salute toward Marcus Vance.

The Special Agent in Charge, a tall man with peppered hair and a gold federal badge on his belt, stepped forward. “Good morning, Chief Judge Vance. The county courthouse and the sheriff’s precinct have been fully secured. The warrants are being executed as we speak.”

The words hit the room like a physical blow.
