It was Marcus Vance.

Brad’s breath hitched in his throat. He shook his head violently, refusing to accept the letters printed on the page. “No... No! This is a trick! This is a fake document! My father was Sheriff Thomas Miller! I have his blood! I wear his badge!”

“You wear his cruelty, Brad, but you do not wear his blood,” Marcus said, his voice lowering to a somber, steady hum.

From the floor, Margaret raised her tear-stained face, looking up at her son with eyes full of unbearable agony. “It’s the truth, Brad... God forgive me, it’s the truth.”

“Thirty years ago,” Marcus began, turning slightly to address the silent room, his voice filling the diner with the weight of a forgotten history, “I was a young attorney in this county. I was born here, raised in the small black neighborhood behind the old timber mill. I went away to law school, earned my degree, and came back to Oakridge to help the poor farmers whose land was being illegally seized by corrupt town officials.”

Marcus paused, looking out the window at the town he had once loved. “I fell in love with your mother, Margaret. We were engaged to be married. But your father, Thomas Miller, was then a rising deputy with limitless ambition and a ruthless heart. When I uncovered a massive extortion ring operated by Thomas and his circle, I threatened to take my evidence to the federal prosecutors in Atlanta.”

Margaret buried her face back in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently. “Thomas threatened to murder Marcus... He burned down Marcus’s family home... He told me that if I didn’t break the engagement and marry him, he would make sure Marcus never made it out of the county alive...”

Marcus nodded slowly. “I was framed for a crime I didn’t commit, hunted out of my own hometown in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on my back. I didn’t know Margaret was pregnant with you when I fled. Thomas forced her into a marriage to cover up her pregnancy, claimed you as his own, and used you as a weapon to torment her for three decades.”

Brad stared at his mother, his chest heaving as tears finally spilled over his eyes, tracking lines through the dust on his cheeks. “He... he beat you, didn’t he?” Brad whispered, memories from his childhood suddenly reframing themselves in his mind—the hidden bruises his mother wore, the loud arguments behind locked bedroom doors, the constant fear that hung over their household.
