"Based on what evidence?"
Mitchell stepped closer, pressing his badge against the cracked glass. "Based on me saying so."
Lawson stepped forward, his voice tight. "Cole... man, look at the system again..."
"Stay back, Kevin! I’m handling this!" Mitchell snapped.
Derek slowly flipped open the leather credential case in his hand. He pressed the shield against the reinforced glass, holding it directly beneath the beam of Mitchell’s flashlight. Gold and enamel glittered under the harsh light. Mitchell’s eyes locked onto the bold black lettering stamped across the top: FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION.
The officer's expression shifted instantly. The arrogance vanished, replaced by a sudden, rigid stillness. His jaw clamped shut. His shoulders stiffened. Slowly, the heavy flashlight lowered toward his belt.
"Special Agent Derek Hayes," Derek said, his voice cutting through the sound of falling rain.
Lawson took a full step backward on the pavement. Mitchell stared at the badge, then slowly looked up into Derek's eyes. For five long seconds, the highway was dead silent except for the hum of idling engines.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Mitchell muttered, his voice cracking.
