The board unanimously voted to uphold his termination and recommended the permanent revocation of his law enforcement certification. But the true reckoning was yet to come inside a federal courtroom.

Six months later, the trial of United States v. Cole Mitchell and Frank Maddox commenced at the federal courthouse downtown.

The prosecution called a succession of witnesses: the neurosurgeon whose Porsche was stolen, the software executive, and Officer Kevin Lawson, who gave tearful testimony about how Mitchell pressured him to run illegal background checks.

Then, Special Agent Derek Hayes took the witness stand.

Dressed in a dark blue suit, Derek spoke with quiet authority, walking the jury through every piece of evidence—the GPS tracking logs, the encrypted text messages, the bank transfers, and the physical damage to his vehicle.

The prosecutor displayed a large photograph on the projection screen: the cracked window of Derek’s Lamborghini, with Mitchell's reflection clearly visible in the glass.

"Agent Hayes," the prosecutor asked, "when Officer Mitchell struck your window and demanded you get out, what went through your mind?"

Derek looked directly at the twelve jurors. "I thought about all the citizens who sat in that driver's seat before me. People who didn't have a federal badge in their pocket. People who didn't have backup waiting down the highway. I thought about how easy it was for a man with a badge and a gun to make an innocent person feel completely helpless, simply because he believed no one would ever take their word over his."
