Lawson looked up from his screen, his jaw slightly slack. "Cole... the registration comes back clean. Vehicle is registered directly to a Derek Hayes."

Mitchell didn't back down. "Doesn't mean he's Derek Hayes. Could be stolen with cloned plates."

"You have my driver's license in your hand," Derek noted calmly. "The photo matches. The name matches. The address on the registration matches the address on the license."

And yet, Officer Mitchell stood there, desperately hunting for a reason—any reason—to justify why a Black man in a tailored shirt had no right to be sitting inside a Italian supercar. That was the exact second Derek realized this was no longer an ordinary traffic stop. It was personal. It was targeted.

"Step out of the vehicle," Mitchell ordered, pulling his baton.

"On what grounds?"

"Suspicion of vehicle theft and suspected stolen property."

"Your partner just verified ownership."

"I suspect fraudulent documentation."
