In the video, Cynthia Vale stood at a podium inside the opulent neighborhood clubhouse, speaking in front of a giant projector screen. The slide behind her read: CEDAR RIDGE WESTERN ACCESS IMPROVEMENT - PHASE TWO.

"As you all know," Cynthia’s voice echoed clearly in the recording, "traffic congestion at our main entrance has hit critical levels. I am thrilled to announce that Phase Two of our West Gate initiative is moving forward on schedule."

A resident in the front row raised his hand. "Cynthia, what about that old farmhouse on the western edge? Doesn't someone live there?"

Cynthia gave a graceful, practiced wave of her hand. "That structure has been abandoned for years. The individual currently staying there is an illegal squatter who broke into the premises. County officials have verified the parcel is unowned, and our legal team is currently finalizing the eviction process. Once law enforcement removes him, clearing the land for our private access road will begin immediately."

Another resident asked, "How much has this phase cost us so far?"

Cynthia smiled broadly. "To date, the board has authorized $84,260 from our reserve funds for preliminary civil engineering, traffic impact assessments, and site boundary prep. It is an investment that will add at least ten percent to all our home values!"

I stared at the screen, my blood running cold.

Eighty-four thousand dollars.

She hadn't just made a mistake. She had lied to her entire community. She had spent eighty-four thousand dollars of her neighbors' hard-earned HOA dues on engineering plans for land that belonged to my family.

And when I unexpectedly moved back into my home, I didn't just disrupt her quiet expansion plan—I became a walking, breathing threat to her entire fraud. If the residents discovered I was the legal owner, they would realize she had squandered $84,000 of their money.

She didn't just want me gone because she disliked my old truck. She needed me to be a squatter, because if I wasn't a squatter, she was a criminal.

I picked up my phone and called my long-time personal attorney and friend, Richard Cole. Richard had been my law partner thirty years ago before I took the bench.

"Daniel? It’s almost ten o'clock. Is everything okay?" Richard asked.

"Richard, I need you to represent me in a civil matter," I said. "I'm sending you some files."

I emailed him the video, the certified survey, the 72-hour notice to vacate, and my log of events.

Ten minutes later, Richard called me back. His voice was dead serious. "Daniel... this woman is insane. She’s committing blatant fraud and attempting a fraudulent land grab."
