The survey map showed our forty-six acres clearly demarcated by three concrete county monuments along the eastern line.
Cynthia’s map was different. On her map, a heavy, dark-red hatched line pushed six acres past the county monuments, directly across my eastern hay field, cutting straight through my driveway. And printed inside that red hatched zone were four words in bold caps: FUTURE WESTERN ACCESS CORRIDOR.
This wasn't a misunderstanding about fence lines or unmowed grass.
Cedar Ridge wanted a second entrance. And to get it, Cynthia Vale was trying to erase my existence.
The realization hit me like a cold wave. Cedar Ridge was a massive subdivision with over three hundred homes, but it only had one primary entrance onto the main highway. For years, residents had complained about traffic jams during morning rush hour and potential hazards if emergency vehicles ever needed to get in while the main gate was blocked.
A western access road connecting directly to County Route 14 would solve their traffic problems instantly and boost property values across the entire subdivision.
And the only thing standing in the way of that multi-million-dollar upgrade was forty-six acres of Mercer family land.
The next morning, I drove down to the County Recorder of Deeds office in the county seat. I didn't call ahead, and I didn't tell anyone I was a circuit judge. I walked up to the public counter in jeans and a denim jacket.
"How can I help you, sir?" asked the young clerk behind the counter.
"I need certified copies of all current recorded documents for Parcel ID 117-04-22," I said.
She typed the number into her terminal. "Owner of record shows as Daniel Samuel Mercer. Tax payments are current. No outstanding liens, no tax sales, no pending foreclosures."
"Are there any recorded easements, access corridors, or HOA declarations attached to this parcel?"
She searched the historical index for several minutes, scrolling through pages of records. "None. The last recorded conveyance was a warranty deed transferring full fee-simple ownership from Samuel Mercer Jr. to Daniel Mercer six years ago. The parcel is completely clear."
"Has any municipal or county agency declared this structure abandoned or subject to eminent domain?"
She looked at me like I was insane. "Sir, county government can't declare private property abandoned just to hand it to a neighborhood association. If someone's claiming that, they're lying to you."
"I'd like stamped, certified copies of the deed, the 2015 boundary survey, and the original 2002 Cedar Ridge subdivision plat," I said.
