Cynthia swallowed hard, her confidence rapidly evaporating. "Our... our legal team determined that this land was part of our community expansion perimeter."

"Do you have a recorded deed?" Sheriff Hale asked again, his tone turning cold.

"No... but—"

"Do you have a signed, recorded easement from Daniel Mercer or his father?"

"We have a planning document—"

"Ms. Vale," Sheriff Hale interrupted sternly. "A planning document is not a legal property title. You called emergency dispatch and reported an active criminal trespass and violent threats."

Sheriff Hale turned to the survey foreman, who was still standing by his truck. "Sir, did Judge Mercer threaten you or your crew?"

"No, Sheriff," the foreman stated loudly. "Not at all. He politely showed us a county survey showing he owned the land, and suggested we check with our insurer before driving stakes. He was completely peaceful."

Sheriff Hale looked back at Cynthia, his eyes narrowing. "So you filed a false report claiming a judicial officer was committing violent threats on his own private property?"

Cynthia’s panic was palpable, but instead of backing down, her humiliation curdled into pure, venomous spite. She realized she was trapped, so she did what desperate people always do: she went on the attack.

"This is corruption!" she shrieked, pointing an accusing finger at Sheriff Hale. "You know him! You're covering for him because he's a judge! You're abusing your police power to protect your buddy!"

Sheriff Hale’s jaw set like granite. "Ms. Vale, I know every judge in this county because I've worked in law enforcement for thirty years. But I don't take orders from judges on property disputes, and I don't tolerate people using my dispatchers to execute illegal land grabs."

"I will have my attorneys file a formal complaint with the State Judicial Conduct Commission!" Cynthia spat, her eyes glaring at me with hatred. "You intentionally concealed your position to trap me! You abused your public office!"

"My title has nothing to do with my deed, Cynthia," I said softly. "If I were a mechanic, a schoolteacher, or unemployed, this deed would still be valid, and you would still be trespassing."

"We're not finished!" she yelled, stumbling back into her Mercedes. She slammed the door, threw the vehicle into reverse, tore up my grass, and sped away down the county road.

Sheriff Hale handed my documents back to me with a heavy sigh. "Daniel... she’s not going to stop. A woman like that, with that much pride on the line? She’s going to double down."
