It claimed an unidentified trespasser had unlawfully taken possession of an abandoned structure. Attached to the bottom was a second sheet that made my blood run cold: UNAPPROVED STRUCTURAL ALTERATION and OBSTRUCTION OF COMMUNITY ACCESS.

My driveway had existed since 1919. It fed directly into the county road. No Cedar Ridge street connected to it. No easement existed.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the number listed on the notice.

"Cedar Ridge HOA, Cynthia speaking."

"This is Daniel Mercer. I'm calling about the notice stapled to my gate."

There was a long pause on the line. Then, with an audible smirk, she said, "Oh. The squatter."

"I am the owner of this property," I said, keeping my voice level.

"So you claim," Cynthia replied smoothly. "People wave around old paper deeds from last century all the time, Mr. Mercer. That doesn't mean you have legal right of occupancy. Our residents pay substantial annual assessments to maintain community standards, safety, and property values. We cannot allow an unidentified individual to move into a derelict structure, park an eyesore vehicle on grass, and interfere with subdivision access."

"Have you checked the county land records?"

"We have conducted appropriate internal due diligence," she snapped.

"Send me your records."

"I am under no obligation to share internal HOA documentation with a non-member trespasser."

"You are claiming jurisdiction over my land, Cynthia."

"I am enforcing community standards over our expansion perimeter. You don't belong here, Mr. Mercer. The sooner you accept that, the less expensive this will be for you." She hung up.

I didn't call back. Instead, I walked into my home office, pulled out a fresh yellow legal pad, and began doing what thirty years in the legal system had trained me to do: documenting everything. I noted the date, time, and exact words of our conversations. I photographed the orange notices on my gate. I created a dedicated file labeled Cedar Ridge / HOA Dispute.

To understand why Cynthia was so aggressive, you have to understand the geography of our county. Cedar Ridge was built in the early 2000s, right against my family's eastern border. It was a gated enclave of $800,000 brick mansions, manicured lawns, artificial fountains, and landscaped medians. When developers first broke ground twenty years ago, they tried to buy my father out. He refused. They offered him double market value for an access corridor. He refused again. The developers were forced to re-engineer their subdivision layout, ending their western border precisely at our property line.
