It was supposed to be an ordinary autumn afternoon in Bellwood Estates, one of the most prestigious gated communities in the city. The neighborhood was known for its perfect lawns, expensive houses, and residents who took pride in keeping their quiet image untouched.
Fourteen-year-old Jamal Carter had no idea that a simple bike ride home from basketball practice would change his life forever.
Jamal was a hardworking high school freshman who loved basketball, technology, and spending time with his family. He had lived in Bellwood Estates for years and knew every street, every shortcut, and every corner of the community.
That afternoon, he stopped near Maple Drive to check a message on his phone. His basketball bag rested on his shoulder as he stood beside his bike.
Then he noticed someone watching him.
Victoria Langford, a 52-year-old woman who had lived in the neighborhood for more than two decades, stood across the street. She was known among residents as someone who valued rules, appearances, and control.
