Floodlights suddenly ripped through the darkness, blinding Karen and Tyler. Four unmarked police cruisers slid out from behind the abandoned storefronts, their red and blue lights painting the cracked asphalt. It wasn't the local precinct cops Karen had in her pocket; it was the State Police Auto Theft Task Force, led by a detective I had contacted right after finding the 1994 zoning maps. "Hands in the air! Step away from the vehicle!" a voice boomed over a megaphone. Tyler froze, his tough-guy persona vanishing in an instant. He dropped his keys and threw his hands up, his knees visibly shaking. Karen, however, couldn't let go of her illusion of power. She marched right toward the lead detective, pointing her finger in his face. "Do you know who I am?" she shrieked. "I am the President of the Oakridge Homeowners Association! This is an official impound! You are harassing innocent citizens!" The detective, a tall, imposing man named Russo, didn't even blink. "Ma'am, you are standing next to a stolen vehicle with a scrubbed VIN, in the middle of a known fencing drop zone." I walked out from the shadows and approached the circle of police cars. Karen saw me, and her face twisted in pure hatred. "You!" she screamed, lunging toward me before two officers grabbed her arms. "You set us up! This is a civil dispute! You're violating my rights!" "It's not a civil dispute, Karen," I said calmly, handing a thick folder to Detective Russo. "Because my house isn't in your HOA. It never was. You didn't impound my property; you orchestrated a grand larceny on private land." Karen stared at me, her mouth opening and closing silently as the reality of my words hit her. But the night wasn't over. Tyler, watching his mother get handcuffed, suddenly broke. "It was her idea!" he screamed, pointing at Karen. "She made me do it! She told me who to target!"
