I shattered every speed limit getting back to Oakridge. As I skidded into my driveway, my heart dropped. The side door to my garage was splintered open, the wood frame cracked and hanging off the hinges. I rushed inside, my fists clenched, expecting to find Tyler tearing through my tool chests. Instead, the garage was empty, but my heavy-duty fireproof safe, where I kept my grandfather's vintage watch collection and a significant amount of emergency cash, had been dragged to the center of the floor, deep gouge marks scoring the concrete. Tyler had tried to steal it but couldn't lift it into his truck. I walked out of the garage, the adrenaline turning into a cold, calculated fury. I didn't call the police. The local cops were too slow, too tangled in Karen’s web of civil dispute excuses. I needed to end this on my terms, in a way that Karen could never talk her way out of. I walked down the street, straight toward Karen’s house. She was standing in her front yard, watering her pristine hydrangeas, looking like the picture of suburban innocence. "You look stressed, Mark," she called out, a venomous sweetness in her voice. "Did you get the notice about the lien? Such a shame. If you just apologize and pay the fines, I might let the board release your little toy." I stopped at the edge of her driveway. "You made a mistake, Karen. A really big one." She scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Oh, please. What are you going to do? Sue the HOA? We have better lawyers than you could ever afford." "I don't need a lawyer," I said, my voice eerily calm. "I just need a buyer." I pulled my phone from my pocket and held up the screen so she could see it. It was a live Craigslist ad. For Sale: 2024 Yamaha Grizzly. Matte Black. $10,000 cash. Must pick up tonight. Karen’s face went completely white.
