Marcus placed a thick file on the counter. Inside was a full federal whistleblower immunity agreement, already drawn up.
“I’m not asking you to forgive my family,” Marcus said softly. “I’m asking you to help me burn Victor’s empire to the ground.”
Darius stared at the file. The silence stretched for a long, agonizing minute. He reached out, his grease-stained fingers hovering over the paper, before he finally opened the cover.
The atmosphere in the executive boardroom the next morning was electric with anticipation.
Victor sat at the head of the table, dressed in a bespoke Italian suit, radiating the quiet confidence of an apex predator who had already won the hunt. Derek sat beside him, grinning openly, tapping an expensive pen against his notebook. The board members—seven older men and women whose loyalty Victor had purchased with offshore kickbacks—avoided eye contact with the door.
At exactly 9:00 AM, Marcus walked in. He looked tired.
Victor leaned forward, steepling his fingers. “Marcus. Let’s keep this brief. Your erratic behavior, your harassment of key executives, and your unauthorized investigations are destabilizing Vanguard. The board has invoked Section 4 of the bylaws. We have the votes. You’re out.”
Derek snickered. “Don’t worry, uncle. I’m sure we can find you a spot in the janitorial department. You already have the uniform.”
Marcus didn't sit down. He stood at the end of the table, looking at the faces of the board members. “Is this a formal, binding vote?”
“It is,” the board chairman said, shifting uncomfortably. “The paperwork is already signed and filed with the state registry as of ten minutes ago.”
Victor smiled. “It’s over, Marcus. Pack your things. Security will escort you out.”
Marcus didn't move. Instead, the exhaustion on his face slowly melted away, replaced by a cold, predatory calm. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his phone, and placed it on the table.
“Thank you,” Marcus said.
