The icy splash of the vanilla creamer hit the back of the older man’s neck before he even heard the laughter.

Derek stood over the small, scuffed breakroom table, holding the empty plastic cup upside down. Drops of thick white liquid ran through the older man’s salt-and-pepper hair, dripping down his forehead and soaking into the collar of his faded gray maintenance uniform. The executive lounge of Vanguard Holdings—a room usually reserved for six-figure salaries and tailored suits—erupted into a cruel, echoing chorus of amusement.

“Time for your morning milk, janitor,” Derek sneered, tossing the empty cup onto the man’s lunch tray.

Across the room, Victor, the company’s Chief Operating Officer and Derek’s father, leaned against the espresso machine. He didn’t stop his son. Instead, he took a slow sip of his coffee, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips. To them, the man sitting at the table was just another nameless, invisible contractor who had wandered onto the wrong floor.

The older man didn’t flinch. He didn’t shout. He didn’t scramble to his feet.

Slowly, deliberately, he reached for a thin paper napkin. He wiped his forehead. Then his cheek. Then the collar of his uniform. His hands were calloused but perfectly steady. There was no humiliation in his dark eyes. Only a quiet, terrifying patience.

Derek leaned in close, his heavy cologne masking the smell of the spilled coffee. “Are you deaf, old man? I said, this floor is for executives. Take your mop and get back to the basement before I have security throw you out onto the pavement.”

The older man folded the stained napkin into a perfect square. He set it down. He looked at the gold nameplate pinned to Derek’s custom blazer, then shifted his gaze to Victor across the room.

“Enjoy your coffee, Derek,” the man said. His voice was a low, gravelly baritone that didn’t match his uniform.

He hadn’t looked at Derek’s name tag. He already knew it.

Near the door, Maya, a mid-level financial auditor, gripped her tablet so tightly her knuckles turned white. She had spent five years at Vanguard learning to keep her head down, knowing that Victor and his son destroyed anyone who didn’t laugh at their cruel jokes. But looking at the older man, a chill ran down her spine. He wasn't afraid.

And as the man quietly stood up and walked out of the lounge, leaving Derek laughing with his friends, Maya realized something that made her breath catch.

The old man wasn't holding a mop. He was holding a leather-bound folder bearing the personal crest of the company’s recently deceased founder.
