Chapter 1 — The Visitor Nobody Wanted to Help
The headquarters of Sterling Motors was known as one of the most advanced automotive companies in America.
Inside the massive glass building, everything represented success.
Executives wearing tailored suits walked quickly through the halls. Engineers discussed new technology. Investors visited from around the world to see the company’s latest innovations.
Everyone who entered looked important.
Except one man.
Early one Monday morning, an elderly Black man walked through the main entrance carrying a small leather notebook.
His name was Daniel Carter.
He wore a simple gray sweater, dark trousers, and old brown shoes. His clothes looked ordinary compared to the expensive suits surrounding him.
He did not carry a briefcase.
He did not have assistants following him.
He simply walked slowly, looking around the building with a quiet smile.
The receptionist immediately noticed him.
She watched as Daniel looked at the company’s newest electric vehicle display in the lobby.
The car was surrounded by cameras and promotional lights.
Daniel stepped closer, studying the design carefully.
A young employee nearby noticed him.
“Sir, are you here for a tour?” the employee asked.
