The atmosphere froze. Officer Miller blinked, recognizing Maya’s name immediately from the recent title transfers processed through the board office. He looked back at Eleanor, whose face was rapidly draining of color, replaced quickly by an ugly, mottled flush of sheer embarrassment and mounting fury. "Wait—what?" Eleanor stammered, her voice cracking slightly. "That... that's impossible! No one notified me of a sale to... to a young woman! The board has to approve all background checks and architectural consistency reviews!" Maya chuckled softly, a sound devoid of any warmth. "Well, Eleanor, the board did approve it. Your signature is literally on page four of the escrow clearance form. But I suppose you were too busy policing lawn heights to actually read the documents crossing your desk." Maya turned away from Eleanor, pulled a set of polished brass keys from her pocket, slid one into the heavy mahogany front door, and pushed it open, revealing an empty, sunlit foyer filled with moving boxes. "Officer Miller, thank you for responding. As you can see, I am simply inspecting my new home. I believe I have every right to be here. If this board member continues to harass me on my own property, I won't hesitate to file a formal restraining order and a civil suit for discrimination and trespassing." Miller cleared his throat uncomfortably, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "Everything seems to be in order here, Eleanor," Miller said quietly, looking down at his clipboard to avoid eye contact with the furious board member. "My apologies, Ms. Peterson. Welcome to the neighborhood." Miller turned on his heel, hopped back into his golf cart, and drove away as fast as the electric vehicle would allow, leaving Eleanor standing alone on the porch like a deflated balloon.
SHE THOUGHT HER HOA BADGE GAVE HER THE RIGHT TO TERRORIZE A NEW NEIGHBOR, BUT WHEN SHE TAPPED ON THE WRONG DOOR, THE POLICE HANDCUFFED HER INSTEAD OF THE INNOCENT OWNER IN A SHOCKING DOWNFALL.
