Ryan looked at David.

"I didn't know."

David nodded.

"I understand."

Laura looked at Ryan.

"Why was he stopped?"

Ryan explained.

"Recent vehicle thefts."

"Routine questions."

Laura nodded.

"That's understandable."

Then she looked at David.

"But?"

David smiled.

"But nothing."

He looked at Ryan.

"The officer was doing his job."

Ryan seemed surprised.

"You aren't upset?"

David shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because asking questions is part of the job."

He paused.

"But listening to answers matters too."

That sentence stayed with Ryan.

Because it revealed the difference between suspicion and judgment.

Chapter 3 — The Agent Who Once Led the Room

After the situation was resolved, Ryan apologized.

"Mr. Carter, I apologize if I made you uncomfortable."

David smiled.

"Thank you."

"I didn't realize who you were."

David nodded.

"Most people don't."

Ryan looked confused.

"Why?"

David looked at the gas station.

"Because I don't introduce myself that way."

He explained that after retirement, he wanted a normal life.

"When people know your position, they sometimes treat you differently."

Ryan nodded.

"And you don't want that?"

"No."

David smiled.

"I want to know how people act when they don't know my background."

Ryan thought about that.

Because it was true.

If David had immediately said he was a former FBI agent, the entire conversation would have changed.
