When Liam walked through the front door the next evening, he dropped his leather duffel bag and smiled exactly the way he always did. It was the same warm, tired smile that used to make my heart flutter. Not tonight. I was sitting in the dark living room, a stack of printed bank statements spread across the coffee table like a deck of morbid tarot cards. He stopped in his tracks, the smile melting off his face. "Claire? Why are you sitting in the dark?" I didn't yell. I didn't scream. My voice was dangerously quiet. "Where is the $1.2 million, Liam? And why did a realtor try to kick me out of my grandfather's house?" For a split second, I saw sheer panic flash in his eyes. But Liam was always a performer. He immediately dropped to his knees, burying his face in his hands, and began to sob. Deep, violent, heaving sobs. "I'm so sorry, Claire. I'm so, so sorry," he choked out, crawling toward me. "I was trying to protect you." He spun a wild, desperate tale. He claimed he had been secretly sued for medical malpractice by a powerful, mob-connected family in New York after a botched surgery. He said they were coming after all our assets, that his medical license was under investigation, and that he had to liquidate everything and hide the money in an offshore account to save us from total bankruptcy. "We have to move into a rental, Claire. Just for a few months until the dust settles. I forged your name because I didn't want you implicated in the lawsuit. I did it for us!" he cried, gripping my knees. Part of me—the part that loved him—wanted to believe it. But as I was doing the laundry the next morning, my hands shaking as I emptied his pockets, I pulled out a crumpled velvet-textured receipt from a luxury jeweler in Manhattan. It was dated three days ago. The day he was supposedly in Chicago. It was for a $45,000 custom-cut diamond engagement ring.
