Officer Chen photographed the garbage and collected the bucket Sylvia had left behind. It was an industrial bucket, not a household one. Its faded label read: TRACELINE ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS, with a partially erased safety code below it.

Chen knocked on Sylvia’s door. She answered wearing different gloves and without the green coat. She calmly denied entering his property. When Chen showed her a still image from the video, she leaned closer. “That video has been altered,” she stated. "It came from a fixed camera," Chen said. She insisted it only "resembled" her and that she owned several buckets. “Did you pour water onto his porch?” Chen asked. “No,” she said.

Despite the clear video evidence, the police told Mason they could only issue a citation for trespassing and minor vandalism. It wasn't enough to make her stop. That night, Mason sat at his kitchen island with his pregnant wife, Sarah, staring at the citation slip. Sarah was trembling. The stress of the past five months was taking a physical toll on her, and the anonymous city complaints were threatening their refinance approval. If the loan fell through, they wouldn't have the cash to cover the upcoming hospital bills.
